NEW BRITISH sports car maker Elemental has confirmed that its Elemental RP1 roadster will enter production early next year. The Elemental RP1 a lightweight, low-volume model pitched against rivals such as the KTM X-Bow and Vuhl 05 is being built by a small group of engineers and designers with previous experience at McLaren, Jeep, Porsche and numerous works BTCC teams.

While initially scheduled to come to market this summer, delays with preparing the car for production mean customer deliveries have been put back to early next year. The RP1 will be launched with a choice of two engines, both from Ford’s Ecoboost family. The 1.0-litre three cylinder Ecoboost will provide the RP1 with around 180bhp and 177lb ft, which should propel it to 62mph in an estimated 3.0sec and on to a top speed of 150mph. In 2.0 litre four-pot form, the RP1 will have 280bhp and 325lb ft and an estimated top speed of 170mph.

More significantly, the Elemental RP1 weighs just 540kg in 1.0-litre form, making it a full 336kg lighter than an entry-level Lotus Elise. While final pricing has yet to be confirmed, project director Jeremy Curnow says the RP1 will be pitched between the £39,900 Elise and the £110,000 BAC Mono. Previous estimates have placed the RP1 at £40,000 to £50,000.
