If you’re bored with the ubiquity of premium German cars and have a genuine taste for being different, the facelifted DS 5 may very well appeal to you. No longer a Citroën badged model but one from the now stand alone DS brand, the DS 5 is a kind of cross between a premium hatchback, coupé and SUV and it’s a genuine original.
The most obvious changes are to the styling of the car’s nose. The new DS corporate grille makes its debut on this car. Replacing a design that wore the twin Citroën chevrons as its main signature, the new grille has a more upright stance and features a wide, polished aluminium-effect surround. The design of the headlights and lower bumper have also been tweaked.

Inside, the distinctive ‘cockpit’ interior now gets a 7.0in touchscreen, Mirror Link for compatible smartphones and the curiously named ‘eMyWay’ sat-nav system as standard on the UK’s Prestige and Elegance trim levels. The most important change to the new DS 5 is under the skin. When the original Citroën version was launched in 2011, it was panned for its poor ride and noisy suspension. Running changes shortly after the car’s launch did help, but the new DS 5 has a more comprehensive cure.

The new car’s ride height has been raised “by a few millimetres” and it gets new dampers with a longer compression stroke and ‘pre-loaded valve technology’ that limits sudden changes in damper force. The revised DS 5 line-up offers three strengths of BlueHDi diesel engine (118bhp, 147bhp and 178bhp) and a 162bhp turbo petrol motor. The unusual four-wheel-drive hybrid variant (which has a 2.0-litre diesel engine driving the front wheels and an electric motor driving the rear wheels) also remains in the range as the flagship model.

The interior is mostly unchanged, which means a substantial centre console and dramatically sloping dashboard. Unlike cars from the established German premium brands, which are moving to ever more minimalist interiors, the 5 is loud and proud in its difference. This is a comfortable cabin. The raised ride height makes it very easy to get into the front seats, although the slightly oversized, flat-bottomed steering wheel could do with more reach adjustment and the seat could usefully drop another 10mm or so for taller drivers.

Things are a little tighter for rear seat passengers, but the big, square boot is a decent size for the luggage of four occupants. In the 147bhp form tested, the 2.0-litre diesel engine is impressively refined and only really audible at when accelerating hard from low speeds. It’s surprising how quickly it spools up, too. As part of the emphasis on refinement, the DS has been fitted with acoustically damped glass for the side windows. It works. At motorway speeds, the 5 is composed and hushed.

On back roads, there’s a touch of the SUV advantage about the 5 due to its raised ride height and driving position. Clearly, this is not a car to be rushed, though. More important, its predecessor’s terrible ride has been pretty much eliminated. The DS 5 may lack the factorystamped design precision and execution of an Audi A4, but it has its own, distinct appeal and character as well as a healthy standard spec. This is a civilised, long-striding machine with more than a hint of the traditional French ‘grand routier’ cars of the past. It is not an autobahn stormer, and all the better for it.
