Aston Martin DBX details revealed

Following last month’s announcement of a £200million injection of funds, and confirmation that the Aston Martin DBX concept will make production, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer has shed more light on the thinking behind the brand’s most radical model ever.

The all-electric DBX is set to go on sale as a five-door (March’s Geneva Motor Show concept was a three-door), and Palmer said it’s aimed at “white space” , and is “ not dissimilar to the Qashqai in that respect” . He added: “We think there’s a different space to the traditional SUV. Why? Because we make beautiful cars, and it’s hard to make a beautiful SUV… to make a box beautiful.”

Palmer reinforced that the Aston Martin DBX is part of a three part strategy he calls the Second Century Plan. Phase one is Stabilisation replacing the sports car line-up with a new DB9, Vantage and Vanquish – phase two is Core Strengthening, and phase three is Portfolio Expansion, which is where the Aston  Martin DBX comes in. “ Us, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, we’ re all in a race to bring SUVs, crossovers, high-sided saloons – whatever you want to call them – to market. We’re in a race for that kind of customer,” Palmer said. But a source revealed that we won’t see the Aston Martin DBX until 2019, by which time battery tech should allow a 300-mile-plus range and performance befitting of an Aston.
